Cruise Ship Sex Assault Alleged

On December 12, a woman was allegedly sexually violated onboard a cruise ship when it was docked at port.

What happened?

The police at Port Chalmers were reportedly called in to investigate the assault which occured onboard the cruise ship ‘Noordam’ when it docked at port.

Subsequently, the police arrested a 33 year old man for carrying out the assault and has been charged with sexual assault.

No guests involved:

The vessel was carrying about 1900 passengers and 800 crew members was enroute from Akaroa when it was detained at port Chalmers until further investigation. Later in the evening, the vessel was allowed to set sail.

A spokeswoman for Holland America Line, which operates the ship, said no guests were involved in the alleged incident.

The arrested man is scheduled to appear in Dunedin District Court on Wednesday.
