Statkraft and Skagerak Energi have been selected to supply green hydrogen to HeidelbergCement and Felleskjpet’s zero-emission ship, reports renews.BIZ.
The winning concept involves the exchange of containers for compressed hydrogen. The solution is adaptable and can be utilized for both transportation and non-transportation uses.
Green hydrogen for zero-emission vessel
HeidelbergCement and Felleskjpet announced a tender for the supply of green hydrogen for a zero-emission bulkship as part of the Green Shipping Program. The ship will transport grain from Eastern to Western Norway and rock/gravel back, and will be powered by emission-free green hydrogen and rotor sails.
The parties selected Egil Ulvan Rederi AS as their shipping firm earlier this spring and have now granted Statkraft and Skagerak Energi the contract for green hydrogen transport in a competitive process that included more than ten vendors.
Production of hydrogen-based fuels
“Statkraft is Europe’s largest producer of renewable power, and the production of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels is in line with our strategic ambitions. This contract is an important milestone in our efforts to establish Statkraft as a leading hydrogen producer in Norway and Sweden and fits well with the series of other initiatives we have on hydrogen for sea and land transport,” says Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal, Executive Vice President at Statkraft.

“Greenbulk” project

Statkraft and Skagerak Energi will now collaborate with the Green Shipping Program/DNV, HeidelbergCement, Felleskjpet, and the shipping company Ulvan/Norwegian Ship Design to develop the facility’s idea and location. The goal is to be prepared to make an investment decision by summer 2022 in order to begin deliveries in late 2023.
