Engine Fire Onboard Containership: Kotugs To the Rescue

An Euroseas containership stricken by an engine fire off Mozambique was rescued by two Kotug vessels, reports Seatrade Maritime News.

Em Oinousses has an engine fire

The 2500 teu, Em Oinousses sent out a Mayday signal after it suffered an engine fire while sailing from Maputo to Mombasa.

While the crew was able to extinguish the fire it left the vessel uncontrollable approximately 50 miles off the coast of Nacala, Mozambique.

Kotugs to the rescue

Two Kotug rotortugs RT Spirit and RT Magic responded to the distress call and were able to make connections the vessel in high swells and tow the containership to safety.

The 25 crew of the boxship were able to disembark the vessel at the Port of Nacala safely and without injuries on 21 January.

Ard-Jan Kooren, ceo of Kotug International said, “We are glad that we were able to bring the mv Em Oinousses and its crew to a safe haven and prevented a possible disaster for the vessel, its crew, and the environment. I am proud of our well-trained crew who adequately responded to the Mayday signal.”
