Sweden’s shipping company Erik Thun took delivery of the first plug-in hybrid dry cargo vessel belonging to the next-generation Lake Vänern Max series at Ferus Smit Shipyard in the Netherlands. The vessel, Lidan, commenced its maiden journey on October 2, 2024, from Eemshaven, for the first loading of the vessel at Wilhelmshaven, reports Offshore Energy.

Specialized Design for Canal and Lock Navigation

It has a length of 89 meters, with a design tailored to the Trollhättan canal and locks. It links the Swedish inland lakes to the North Sea at Gothenburg. As such, it is built to have the vessel give effective service on routes on those narrow and challenging waterways.

Hybrid Propulsion System for Optimized Efficiency

The Lidan and the other vessels in Lake Vänern Max are hybrid-powered boats that both run on the battery and on fuel. This meansthat Erik Thun can make energy consumption highly efficient while keeping the release of emissions low.

Enhanced Thrust and Lower Emissions

The propulsion system of the ship is designed with a large-diameter propeller operating in a nozzle. This design ensures increased thrust at lower speeds, thus reducing power demand, especially in challenging seaways and icebreaking operations. Operators can reduce main engine power by 18% without losing performance; fuel usage and carbon emissions are reduced considerably.

Shore Connection for Emission-Free Docking

The vessels of the Lake Vänern Max series are equipped with shore connection capabilities that can be used for silent and emission-free operations when in port. This supports clean air quality and reduces noise pollution when staying in ports.

Strengthening Market Presence

“We are making a substantial investment to support our customers’ transportation needs and thereby strengthening our position even further on the short-sea market and on the Lake Vänern traffic,” Senior Charterer JensBäckström, commented on the delivery.
