On November 20, six people suspected to be Somali pirates were detained by Italian mariners and their vessel were seized
What happened?
The Italian vessel ‘ITS Virginio Fasan’ reportedly apprehended six people suspected to be pirates and subsequently seized their vessels.
The six crew members, along with a motor whaler and a skiff were seized after they attacked a containership ‘Ever Dynamic’ and fishing vessel ‘Galerna III’ on November 17 and 18 in the Southern Somali Basin, an area notorious for piracy. The containership was attacked by rocket propellers and the security team onboard the vessel were successful in averting the attack.
Apprehended after search:
The suspected pirate vessels were located using Fasan’s SH-90 helicopter, after initial searches were conducted by the Spanish Maritime Patrol Aircraft Cisne. The search for the suspected pirates was coordinated with partners and from information provided by the masters of the vessels concerned.
A legal process has been initiated to transfer the suspected pirates to the appropriate authority for prosecution.
