Freighter Lists, Spills Cargo, then Strikes Dock

On 14 July, a general cargo ship created havoc near the entrance of the Kiel Canal.

What happened?

A general cargo vessel named ‘Mosvik’ suffered a list of thirty degrees near the Holtenau entrance to the Kiel Canal.

The vessel was very close to capsizing and the crew aboard the vessel called for assistance.

Vessel offered assistance:

The port authorities dispatched 5 tugs to help the listed vessel, meanwhile a police vehicle was hovering around keeping an watch overhead.

The crew released a portion of its cargo of lumber from the vessel to maintain the ship afloat. Around 80 bundles of wood remained adrift posing a risk for other ships navigating the channel. The response teams has their hands full in rounding up the stray cargo, most of which were recovered by Saturday morning.

Ship sticks deck:

Again on Monday, the vessel ‘Mosvik’ struck a loading ramp at the Kiel Port’s Ostuferhaven terminal. The ship deckload which needed repositioning after the listing on Friday was being shifted to another location on her own. The ship struck the loading ramp due to technical issue as the Captain was not able to go into reverse mode.

Investigation launched:

Investigators from the Kiel Water Protection Agency have launched investigation and are looking into the cause of the incident.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. The amount of damage to the ship and the ramp have not be ascertained as of now. Only after a conclusion has been reached the ship will be allowed to resume its voyage to Latvia.
