A Denmark flagged container vessel spilled oil 70 miles off Barcelona in the Mediterranean Sea.  The accidental spill, a consequence of a duty officer’s error, happened during a routine fuel transfer operation from one tank to another.

The Spanish Marine authorities were informed  by the crew of the vessel’s accidental spill. The authorities reverted with an immediate cleaning operation by engaging a helicopter, a surveillance aircraft and anti-pollution vessels. The quantity of spill is unknown.

The vessel was en route from Algeciras to Genoa, Italy with 21 crew members. The Harbour Master of Barcelona enabled the National Maritime Plan at level 1.
