The first semi submersible rig under DNV classification to receive the prestigious Abate (Power+) notation, signifying substantial upgrades targeting reduced greenhouse gas emissions during operations, reports DNV.

Regulatory Framework

Unlike sea vessels regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for carbon intensity, offshore installations currently lack a similar regulatory framework. However, the industry is actively pursuing sustainability improvements.

Abate (Power+) Notation

DNV’s notation sets high emission reduction targets and includes a comprehensive energy and emission management system aligned with ISO 50001 standards. It prioritizes stringent energy consumption monitoring and the implementation of operational and technical strategies for significant emission reductions.

Transocean’s Strategies

Key strategies implemented by Transocean include comprehensive energy consumption monitoring, optimizing operational energy, employing closed bus ties to minimize idle engines (incorporating the DYNPOS(AUTRO-CBT) class notation), and utilizing variable frequency drives in rotating machinery for optimal power control.

Torgeir Sterri, Director of Offshore Class, DNV, said, “We are delighted to award Transocean Norge with our Abate (Power+) notation. To support the offshore industry’s efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and aligning with the targets of the Paris Agreement, we have introduced offshore class standards for emission reduction. Offshore units verified by DNV to meet these standards are paving the way for the industry’s sustainable future.”
