An Alliance Takes Shape

Kolkata’s renowned shipbuilder, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, has expanded its horizons to India’s western seaboard by partnering with the DEMPO Group of Goa. This strategic collaboration sets the stage for a dynamic joint effort in shipbuilding, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Navigating the Agreement

Under the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), GRSE and DEMPO will join forces to co-construct commercial vessels, commencing with smaller units suited for coastal shipping. The three shipyards under DEMPO’s umbrella, situated in Goa and Gujarat, will spearhead the initial phase of this partnership, focusing on vessels designed for eco-friendly coastal transportation.

Green Energy and Innovation

Beyond the initial stage, GRSE and DEMPO have their sights set on larger vessels and pioneering green-energy ships. GRSE has already proven its prowess in this realm with projects such as a zero-emission ferry for West Bengal and a passenger-cum-cargo ferry delivered to the Democratic Republic of Guyana. This collaboration intends to tap into the burgeoning demand for environmentally conscious maritime solutions, catering to both regional and global needs.

Charting a Course for Indian Shipbuilding

Cmde PR Hari IN (Retd), the chairman and managing director of GRSE, emphasizes the potential for robust growth in India’s shipbuilding sector. The partnership with DEMPO Group exemplifies a strong foundation for this expansion. As the two entities embark on a journey of innovation and collaboration, they aim to contribute to the Indian shipbuilding industry’s diversification and advancement, aligning with the nation’s “Make In India” initiative.
