UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency has jointly issued a Marine Guidance Note to all ship owners, shipbuilders, operators, masters, officers and all seafarers on merchant ships and fishing vessels. They have emphasized the need to provide free of charge food and drinking water of appropriate quality, nutritional value and quantity to the people on board. These guidelines are applicable to all type of vessel regardless of the age and size.
It is very important to follow the food hygiene principles, their provision and maintenance of fresh water as bacterial contamination is common risk during the voyage. People who have the responsibility of preparing or serving food should be properly trained for food and personal hygiene to ensure that food is stored, stock rotated, handled, cooked and served safely so as to follow the principles and practices of food hygiene. It is better to have a prevention approach for ensuring food and fresh water safety for the seafarers.
