German liner Hapag-Lloyd is undertaking another jumboisation project, upgrading seven vessels built about a decade ago. These ships are being modified at COSCO Zhoushan Shipyard in China, increasing their capacity from 9,324 TEU to around 10,200 TEU, according to Alphaliner.
Previous and Current Expansion Efforts
-
Current Project (2025):
- Seven vessels sent to China for capacity expansion.
- TEU capacity increased by approximately 900 TEU per ship.
-
2023 Project:
- Seven ships refurbished in Denmark.
- Capacity increased from 8,004 TEU to 9,210 TEU.
Key Modifications
- Higher lashing bridges to support two extra tiers of deck containers.
- Deck houses raised by ~5 meters for increased forward bay load capacity.
- Funnels extended to vent exhaust gases beyond the higher container stacks.
This initiative strengthens Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet efficiency, ensuring higher cargo volumes per voyage and optimizing container transport logistics.
