South Korea’s HD Hyundai Co. announced it had received Approval In Principle (AIP) for its ship cyber security technology from the world’s six major classification societies, marking a first for the country.

Comprehensive Certification for Cyber Resilience Technology

  • Recent Certifications: HD Hyundai recently obtained basic certification for its cyber resilience technology for liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), completing its certification from all six global classification societies.
  • Previous Certifications: The company had previously secured basic certification from the Korean Register (KR) in May of last year, as well as from Bureau Veritas of France (BV), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

Importance of Ship Cyber Resilience

  • Technology Overview: Ship cyber resilience technology is designed to protect ships from cyber threats and minimize the damage caused by information security incidents. This technology is crucial for defending against security attacks such as hacking and ransomware on increasingly digitalized ships.
  • Regulatory Mandates: Starting from July this year, the International Association of Classification Societies will mandate the inclusion of cyber resilience technology in all shipbuilding contracts.

HD Hyundai’s Leadership in Cyber Security

  • Collaborative Development: Since last year, HD Hyundai has been at the forefront of cyber security technology, collaborating on joint development projects with global classification societies to design a cyber resilience network.
  • Hi-Secure Brand: The company has also launched the ship cyber security solution brand “Hi-Secure” through HD Hyundai Marine Solution, reinforcing its commitment to leading in ship cyber security.

HD Hyundai’s pioneering efforts and comprehensive certification underscore its dedication to advancing cyber security in the maritime industry.
