HELCOM Joins Forces With Save The Baltic Sea Campaign

The “Save the Baltic Sea” campaign, a unique environmental initiative and hiking expedition covering eight countries around the Baltic Sea, is set to launch in March 2024. Organized by Lithuanian NGO Už švarią Lietuvą (“For a clean Lithuania”), the expedition will cover nearly 6000 kilometers in nine months. HELCOM, along with the EU4Ocean Platform, the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania, and a network of scientific institutes and NGOs, will be an official partner in this vital environmental campaign.

Objectives of the Expedition

The primary goals of the Save the Baltic Sea campaign include promoting marine conservation culture, raising awareness about marine ecosystems, and fostering collaboration among local communities and stakeholders to combat marine pollution. Throughout the journey, a dedicated team of activists will conduct ocean literacy activities and living labs in each country crossed, encouraging collective action to mitigate pollution in the Baltic Sea.

HELCOM’s Alignment and Campaign Aims

The campaign’s objectives align with HELCOM’s Baltic Sea Action Plan, particularly focusing on knowledge exchange, awareness raising, and promoting public participation in understanding and preserving the Baltic Sea environment. The expedition supports HELCOM’s Action Plan goals, specifically HT27 and HL7, aiming to increase knowledge exchange, awareness, and educational campaigns to prevent the release of hazardous substances into the environment by 2025.
