IINO Lines to Construct Japan’s First Methanol Dual-Fuel Crude Oil Tanker

97

IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO Lines) has announced plans to build Japan’s first large methanol dual-fuel crude oil tanker. This pioneering vessel, set to be constructed at Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY), was designed by a consortium comprising IINO Lines, Idemitsu Tanker Co., Ltd., Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, and NSY. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the vessel will be allocated under a charter agreement with Idemitsu Tanker.

Methanol Dual-Fuel Capability and Environmental Features

The vessel’s dual-fuel design enables it to use methanol in addition to conventional heavy fuel oil, allowing for more flexible and environmentally responsible operations. A key feature of the vessel is its shaft generator, which generates electricity through the main propeller shaft rotation, reducing dependency on fuel-based power sources. This innovative system helps reduce emissions, including CO₂, SOx, NOx, and particulate matter (PM), aligning with IINO Lines’ decarbonization goals.

Commitment to Decarbonization and Industry Leadership

This initiative reflects IINO Lines’ mid-term management strategy, emphasizing the transition to a decarbonized society. With a long-standing history in crude oil transportation, dating back to the construction of its first tanker, the Takatori Maru No. 1, in 1929, IINO Lines continues to lead in safe, stable, and environmentally conscious maritime operations. Collaborating with IINO Marine Service Co., Ltd., IINO Lines leverages extensive expertise and technical innovation to reduce environmental impact and contribute to sustainable shipping.
