Enhance Recycling Options For Foreign Ships At Australian Ports Underway

144

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) are conducting a trial to explore recycling waste from international ships at six Australian ports. This initiative aims to gather data on the biosecurity risks of various recyclable materials, such as plastics and glass, to inform future recycling processes.

Promoting Sustainable Shipping

Currently, Australia’s strict biosecurity regulations mean most waste from international ships is in landfills. This trial seeks to identify low-risk recyclable materials that can be diverted from landfill to recycling, enhancing sustainability. By assessing biosecurity risks, AMSA and DAFF aim to integrate safe recycling practices into domestic systems, supporting environmental protection and sustainable shipping.
