Joaquin Capsizes a Freighter Off Haiti

Vessel Involved: Minouche, a general cargo vessel
Location: 51 nm northwest of Haiti, Caribbean
Casualties: None

The general cargo vessel alerted the United States Coast Guard(USCG) by a distress signal, as the vessel reported 30 degrees portside list.  The 12 crew members aboard the ship were using the life raft to abandon the ship in stormy weather and heavy swells.

It is reported that the severe weather conditions caused by Hurricane Joaquin capsized the ship.

The USCG diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Northland and launched a helicopter crew from Great Inagua, Bahamas, to assist the crew of the sinking vessel.  A good Samaritan vessel and member of Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System(AMVER) has been diverted to the last know position in search of the 1980-built freighter.
