In response to ongoing concerns regarding violence, harassment, and safety in the maritime industry, the Joint Taskforce Working Group (JTWG) has taken decisive action. Their recent recommendations highlight the commitment of key stakeholders to address these issues and improve conditions for seafarers globally.
Updating Industry Guidelines
The JTWG has called upon the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) to review and enhance their Guidance on eliminating shipboard harassment and bullying. This collaborative effort ensures that industry guidelines reflect the latest actions and recommendations from international bodies like the IMO and ILO, reinforcing a commitment to combatting violence and harassment at sea.
Seafarers and Shipowners Speak
Vice-Chairpersons of the JTWG, representing both seafarers and shipowners, express unanimous support for the recommendations. Emphasizing the significance of these measures in fostering a safe working environment, they highlight the importance of regulatory frameworks such as the STCW, ISM Code, and Maritime Labour Convention in addressing safety concerns and promoting a culture of zero tolerance for harmful behaviours.
Tripartite Commitment: Working Towards Industry-Wide Solutions
The successful tripartite consensus reached by the JTWG signifies a pivotal step towards comprehensive measures to eliminate violence and harassment in the maritime sector. With a commitment to adopting regulatory and recommendatory measures, stakeholders are poised to address these issues effectively and create a safer environment for all seafarers, irrespective of vessel or nationality.
In summary, the collaborative efforts of social partners and industry stakeholders underscore a collective commitment to prioritize maritime safety and well-being, laying the groundwork for meaningful change within the industry.
