Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), an intermediary holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, has won an order for six 45,700-ton ConRo vessels, ships that combine features of both a container ship and a roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel, says an article published in Business Korea.
Contract value
The contract, valued at 570 billion won, was awarded by a European client.
ConRo vessels vast storage
ConRo vessels can carry not only container boxes but wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and railroad cars. They can load and unload cargo quickly using a ship crane even at ports without loading and unloading facilities.
The six ConRo vessels can each transport 3,000 cars and 2,000 20-foot containers. In particular, they will be equipped with eco-friendly facilities such as NOx reduction devices and scrubbers against SOx.
Vessel builder
They will be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, a subsidiary of KSOE, in Ulsan and delivered to the shipper sequentially starting from the first half of 2023. Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has built 19 of the 48 ConRo carriers built around the world since 2010, leading this shipbuilding segment.
