Very Large Ore Carrier Spills Oil Off Tanjung Piai

On July 26, a Very Large Ore Carrier “BERGE BUREYA” spilled nearly a ton of bunker fuel into the Straits of Malacca off Tanjung Piai, Malaysia.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Johor Bahru Director Capt (Maritime) Aminuddin Abd Rashid said the leak on the right side of the ship caused about one tonne of HFO to spill into the sea.

The company website reported “A quantity of bunker fuel was spilled and Berge Bulk Maritime is cooperating closely with the Malaysian authorities in the management of the spill and the vessel was boomed following the incident.  The oil leak was stemmed quickly.”

The ship then anchored three nautical miles west of Tanjung Piai to transfer the fuel to another tanker.

“Cleaning up work of the spillage is under way and the shipping company is being assisted by the Department of Environment, the Marine Department and MMEA.”

“However, the ship has been detained and is being investigated under the Environmental Quality Act 1974,” he reportedly said.
