What happened?

Six people have been killed and 15 were hospitalised after inhaling lethal gas that came out from a vegetable container in Pakistan’s port city Karachi. 

The port city close to Karachi Nuclear Power Corporation.

Investigation triggered

The vegetable container was unloaded from a cargo ship in Kemari port area on Sunday night.

DIG Sharjeel Kharal said that the initial investigation showed that fumes emanated from the contained when opened. People around immediately had difficulty breathing and lost consciousness.

Rushed to nearby hospital

Kharal said they were taken to a nearby private hospital immediately. But at the hospital, six people died and 15 are under treatment. The police have sought details of the cargo ship from the port authorities and the Pakistani navy.

Hospital administration confirmed that over 50 patients were brought to the hospital suffering from experiencing stomach ache and breathing problems. 

It was reported that hundreds of people ran away from the affected area after the gas leak.
