An LNG carrier was reportedly damaged in a collision with a crude carrier. The LNG carrier reportedly suffered from significant damages in the collision.
What happened?
The LNG carrier Al Khattiya was damaged in a collision with the crude carrier Jag Laadki in the Gulf of Oman on Fujairah Anchorage.
Damages to mid-ship section:
The gas carrier was anchored off Fujairah when the bow of the manoeuvring crude carrier stuck in her mid-ship section above and below the waterline on its starboard side.
A breach in ballast tanks:
Two ballast tanks on LNG carrier Al Khattiya were breached, suffering water ingress, but fortunately, there were no reports of pollution or explosion.
The gas carrier was in the process of burning the remains of LNG which were still within the pressure tanks, despite the fact that in principle they were empty.
The crude carrier Jag Laadki was under ballast and did reported serious damages, but was detained at anchorage for repairs and special inspection.
Investigation underway:
Even though the LNG carrier was damaged, her seaworthiness was not affected due to the incident and she was allowed to enter the port for further repairs and survey before returning to service.
Fortunately, during the accident, there were no reports of people getting injured.
The local authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the root cause and circumstances leading to the collision.
