LPG Tanker Cargo Offloaded With Faulty Flange

  • Tanker was taken to outer anchorage and safety zone was established around the ship. Technical team boarded tanker in the evening of February 12 to fix the problem.
  • As of March 2, the tanker remains at anchor in designated safe zone, with no ways to berth or offload cargo.

Gas leak in LPG tanker

LPG tanker Gas Prodigy loaded with 2,400 tons of liquid propylene arrived at Fuzhou Chemical Terminal, Fujian Province, China, on Feb 10, from Philippines.

During offload preparations leak was found in a flange of a pump of Tank No.1, and a leak of propylene gas. Propylene mixture with air is highly inflammable, so there was a risk of fire and explosion.

Tanker was taken to outer anchorage and safety zone was established around the ship. Technical team boarded tanker in the evening of February 12 to fix the problem. On February 13 repairs were still under way, reportedly.

Update of the incident

As of March 2, the tanker remains at anchor in designated safe zone.

Though the works done to fix faulty flange were partial success, the LPG tanker was yet considered to be to dangerous to berth and offload her cargo.

Cargo of liquid propylene was offloaded to a barge in STS operation, which lasted from February 29 until March 1. The cargo was offloaded from a tank with faulty flange.
