In a strategic move towards enhancing its fleet capabilities, Ignazio Messina & C. have welcomed the arrival of the state-of-the-art M/V Jolly Argento, the first of its kind in the company’s fleet transition from Ro/Ro container ships to full container units.

This transition marks a pivotal step forward into the competitive full container market. Following closely in its wake, M/V Jolly Oro, the sister ship, is scheduled to join the fleet in September.

Transformative Shift

The deliver of Northern Promotion, renamed Jolly Argento, signs the first step of the partial replacement of the fleet of Ro/Ro container ships with full container units. The vessel, with a transport capacity of 4600 TEU, is 264.32 meters long and 32.20 meters wide and was built by the Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, the same shipyard that had built and delivered our first four Ro/Ro container vessels between 2011 and 2013.

After the delivery in the Korean port of Busan, M/V Jolly Argento will set course for the Chinese port of Guangzhou (Nansha Terminal Phase IV) to load 1,350×40′ HC + 1,000×20′ boxes, all new containers ordered by the company; then, she is scheduled to sail to Jeddah where most of these containers will be unloaded.

Strategic Renewal

M/V Jolly Argento will arrive in Genoa to become part of the East-South Africa line, at the beginning of October. The crew consists of 23 people, 17 of them Italian, under the command of Captain Andrea M. Caselli from Genoa.

The first two full containers to enter service are part of a renewal strategy of our company, which is taking advantage of the high remunerative values of the Ro/Ro container ships and of the changes taking place in the markets and ports in which we operate, where full containers ships guarantee optimized investment and operation costs.

They have also ordered 1,000 new 40′ flat racks and 100 20′ flat racks, both with high cube sides, to reinforce our special equipment fleet and to be able to take on board rolling stock, non containerized goods and exceptional items that are historically a significant part of the transport we offer.
