Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company, is investigating producing green fuel in Egypt as reported by Ship & Bunker.

Speedy delivery

According to the firm, the deal between the company and the authorities will “further speed the delivery of green fuels” and is a step forward from the fuel-sourcing collaborations Maersk announced in early March.

This year, a feasibility study will be conducted in Egypt to determine the viability of manufacturing green bunker fuel from renewable energy, with Maersk as a committed offtake.

Green shipping fuels

According to Maersk, the step is being made to investigate scale-up opportunities in the production of green shipping fuels.

“Even more scale is needed within this decade to continue on the 1.5-degree track [limiting global temperatures to a 1.5-degree rise],” said senior Maersk executive Henriette Thygesen.

“It’s something his partnership is looking into,” she added.
