Maersk Ship on Fire, 4 Sailors Missing

On March 6, a serious fire erupted on a cargo ship in the Arabian Sea and efforts taken by fire-fighters to contain the fire were futile.

What happened?

Singapore flagged vessel ‘Maersk Honam’ caught fire when the vessel was about 650 nautical miles near the Agatti Island.

The crew issued a distress signal and the 23 crew members onboard the vessel was evacuated to safely to the vessel ‘ALS Ceres’ stationed nearby.

The Coast guard was alerted about the incident and efforts taken by them to control the fire were unsuccessful.

Situation critical

The fire is still raging and the situation of the vessel was deemed critical. The fire is reported to have originated from on the containers stored onboard the vessel. Based on various reports, it is suspected that the vessel was transporting hazardous cargo.

Four crew members missing

Out of the twenty seven crew members onboard the vessel, only twenty three were rescued whereas four were reported missing.

The nationalities of the 27 crew members on the Singapore-flagged Maersk Honam include 13 from India, nine from the Philippines, two from Thailand, and one from Romania, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
