  • H&M to scale up carbon neutral ocean product for a greener commercial transport.

According to an article published in Just-Style.com, Swedish apparel giant Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) has taken part in the pilot of a new carbon neutral ocean fuel product launched by global logistics company Maersk, which could help in the move towards greener solutions in commercial transport.

Bio fuel from cooking oil waste

H&M says that the new biofuel-blend comes from wasted cooking oil and has been tested to propel vessels. This has shown promising results in reducing the emissions from ocean shipping.

Sustainable fuel

The Dutch Sustainability Growth Coalition (DSGC) and Shell tested and validated the biofuel earlier this year. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) body certified it as a sustainable fuel.

Soren Toft, Maersk COO, says the biofuel trial on board Mette Maersk has proven that decarbonized solutions can be put into action in the present. Though it is not the complete remedy, it can still serve as a transition solution to reduce CO2 emissions.

Saves 85% than the bunker fuel

Maersk says, with respect to the emissions from upstream production and transportation, the fuel entails savings of 85% compared to bunker fuel.

As a part of the project, the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) will ensure carbon savings are approximately accredited to Maersk’s customers appropriately.

These pilot projects aim to unlock the potential of sustainable fuels so they are employed commercially.

Climate positive target by 2040

H&M is working towards becoming climate positive by 2040 and says that its transportation footprint is comparatively small along the supply chain, accounting for 2% of all emissions.

Helena Helmersson, COO at H&M Group, says that the 2040 target will be reached only with the cooperation and engagement from all parties in the supply chain. She added that they would scale up innovative solutions such as the carbon neutral ocean product for a greener commercial transport.
