One of the world’s largest container shipping groups, Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), has contracted Kongsberg Digital to supply its Vessel Insight digital suite and connectivity to a fleet of around 500 container ships, says an article published in Riviera.

Support under a five-year contract

Kongsberg will also provide cloud services, access to vessel performance applications and further support under a five-year agreement.

“This is a very important contract for MSC, as making our fleet more sustainable is one of our top priorities,” said MSC senior vice president and manager of efficiency for the fleet, network and terminals Gianluigi de Maio.

The agreement includes delivering data infrastructure service Vessel Insight and access to vessel optimisation applications on the Kognifai Marketplace.

“With Kongsberg Digital and the Vessel Insight data infrastructure we will be able to optimise our vessel operations to become more effective, sustainable and safer,” said Mr de Maio.

“The maritime industry is facing strict regulatory requirements to cut emissions and become more sustainable, and we are therefore very pleased and proud to have awarded this contract,” said Mr de Maio. “This is an important step on the way towards a greener operation.”

MSC said it was already “a digitally mature shipping company with many applications and systems in place.”

Improved transparency

By using Vessel Insight’s vessel-to-cloud data infrastructure, MSC will be able to achieve more transparency and improve use of its own data.

“MSC is playing a key role in facilitating trade all over the globe, but also in setting the standard in making the industry more sustainable through digitalisation,” said Kongsberg Digital president Hege Skryseth.

“With Vessel Insight, MSC can contextualise data created by their vessels through the vessel-to-cloud infrastructure and use this to reduce emissions and optimise its entire fleet of container ships.”

MSC will use applications on Kognifai to reduce fuel and optimise voyages to lower emissions to air, to automate reporting processes, and increase safety and crew welfare through stable connectivity.

Ms Skryseth said Kongsberg Digital will work with MSC and Kongsberg Maritime to build more digital products.

“This is solid proof technology, expertise and service are in demand. MSC is taking a big leap forward on its digitalisation journey,” said Ms Skryseth.

“There are still vast steps to be taken in the maritime sector, and digitalisation is key to making shipping safer, greener, and more sustainable.”
