Danish shipping company NORDEN has announced a historic deal with Meta to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime industry. This partnership speaks to both companies’ dedication to high environmental standards and sustainable innovation in maritime logistics, reports Norden.

Emissions Reduction Innovative Solution

NORDEN’s emissions reduction strategy uses the Book & Claim system, whereby biofuel emissions reductions can be allocated to third-party customers like Meta. This way, the geographical limitations of biofuel availability are bypassed by burning biofuel on NORDEN-operated vessels and assigning the reduction benefits through a chain-of-custody system.

Transparency and Certification

To ensure accountability and transparency, NORDEN makes use of the Smart Freight Centre’s Voluntary Market-Based Measure Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting. The biofuel, which is certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), has a life cycle emissions reduction potential of 80–90%. The reductions are authenticated by Normec Verifavia and transacted through the external registry platform 123Carbon.

Flexibility for Global Supply Chains

Anne Jensen, COO at NORDEN, highlighted the flexibility of the solution: “Our Book & Claim solution allows customers of marine transportation across the globe to take advantage of emissions reductions from biofuels, even when biofuels are not physically available to be bunkered on a specific trading route or voyage.”

This solution enables NORDEN’s customers, including those from various industries reliant on maritime transportation, to credibly contribute to the decarbonisation of their supply chains.

Meta’s Commitment to Net Zero

Meta, a global technology leader, is leveraging this partnership to address upstream emissions associated with maritime transportation. Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta, explained: “At Meta, we have a goal to reach net zero emissions across our value chain in 2030. Innovative solutions such as those that NORDEN is providing are critical for companies like Meta to decarbonise our value chain at the pace and scale required to achieve our emissions reduction targets.”

A Step Towards Sustainable Shipping

This collaboration represents a significant step toward sustainable practices in maritime freight, offering a scalable model for reducing emissions across the global shipping industry.
