Itochu Enex Co., Kyushu Electric Power Company, Saibu Gas Co. and NYK Line have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint discussions on the commercialisation of a new business to supply marine LNG, via ship-to-ship transfer, to vessels in the Setouchi and Kyushu areas of western Japan, reads a NYK press release.

Explore marketing activities to consumers

Under the terms of the MoU, the partners say they will explore marketing activities to consumers such as Kyushu Electric Power Company for its LNG-fuelled coal carriers, which are scheduled to be delivered in fiscal year 2023.

The construction and ownership of LNG vessels required for ship-to-ship supply will also be examined.

NYK Line, Kyushu Electric Power Co., Saibu Gas Co., and the Chugoku Electric Power Co. signed a similar MoU in 2018. The following year, the partners carried out what they claimed was the first LNG bunkering in the Setouchi and Kyushu areas of western Japan with the truck-to-ship fuelling of the gas-powered Sakigake tugboat.
