Partnership Connects Portugal with the Netherlands and Germany

  • Strategic Partnership Formed to Establish Green Energy Corridor in Europe.
  • Green Fuel Exports: New Corridor to Link Southern and Northern Europe.
  • Sines Positioned as Key Green Energy Hub on Atlantic Shipping Routes.

On November 5, Madoqua, in partnership with Administração do Porto de Sines, Port of Rotterdam, and duisport – Duisburger Hafen AG, signed a Memorandum of Understanding that established a green energy corridor connecting Portugal with the Netherlands and Germany. It has the support of the Portuguese Government. The project is addressed to a sustainable supply chain for the derivatives of green hydrogen and liquid CO₂, reports Safety4Sea.

Enabling the Export of Green Fuel Across Europe

The new axis shall make possible the transport of the first derivatives of green hydrogen, but, for example, ammonia will have to be definitely transported (MadoquaPower2X), methanol (MadoquaSynfuels) and liquid CO₂. It will be an important highway for Southern Europe and will access huge industrial centres in Northern Europe. It’s a great step for the energy transition in Europe.

Sines as a Green Energy Hub

A green energy corridor will take root at the Madoqua terminal in Sines, Portugal, situated on very important Atlantic shipping lanes. Its fuel input is from renewable sources. The completely renewable-fuelled supply chain of course further secures Europe’s increasing capacity for renewable fuels over the long term.

Scale and Investment

€500 million in investment will be used to scale up green hydrogen production and distribution along with the shift within Europe. With this amount of investment, the commitment is a big step toward developing green fuel infrastructure and accelerating the transition toward a low-carbon future.

Aligning with the EU Decarbonization Goals

The project will directly contribute to the decarbonization and enhancement of energy security and industrial resilience goals intended for the EU. The Madoqua GreenFuels Terminal in Sines has been targeted as one of the projects of interest under the funding carried out by the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency under CEFEnergy. It is therefore an important investment for Europe’s energy transition
