Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd., and Amogy have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to integrate Amogy’s advanced ammonia-cracking technology into Yanmar’s hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE). This collaboration aims to create a groundbreaking solution for decarbonizing marine power generation. Amogy’s technology utilizes state-of-the-art catalyst materials to efficiently break down ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen at lower reaction temperatures, reducing heating and maintenance needs. The partnership seeks to provide low-cost hydrogen fuel, contributing to a comprehensive clean energy solution for the marine industry.
Potential for Maritime Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems
Building on their joint research, Yanmar and Amogy will explore the development of maritime hydrogen fuel cell systems. This potential collaboration underscores their commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions. Ken Kawabe, Group Leader at Yanmar Research and Development Center, expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing its alignment with Yanmar’s commitment to a sustainable future. Seonghoon Woo, CEO at Amogy, highlighted the importance of collaboration in overcoming challenges and accelerating sustainable progress in the marine sector.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
The partnership between Amogy and Yanmar began in 2023 when Yanmar Ventures, Yanmar’s corporate venture capital arm, invested in Amogy. Since then, both companies have been exploring opportunities to integrate their technologies, paving the way for innovative advancements in marine power decarbonization.
