In a bid to revolutionize port operations and promote sustainability, the Ports of Bilbao and Portsmouth International Port have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster cooperation. This agreement underscores their commitment to sharing resources, leveraging technology, and streamlining operations to facilitate efficient multimodal port services.
Electrifying Port Infrastructure: BilbOPS and Sea Change Projects
The Ports of Bilbao and Portsmouth are spearheading electrification initiatives such as the BilbOPS project and Portsmouth International Port’s Sea Change project. These endeavours aim to establish onshore power systems, enabling vessels to access renewable power while docked. With support from funding programs like CEF Transport 2021-2027, these projects are poised to enhance sustainability and reduce emissions significantly.
Establishing Green and Digital Shipping Corridors
The MoU paves the way for the creation of green and digital shipping corridors between Bilbao and Portsmouth. By sharing information and promoting modern technology, both ports aim to shift traffic from road haulage to sustainable shipping routes. This collaborative effort aligns with broader initiatives to mitigate environmental impact and foster sustainable transportation practices.
Embracing Digitalization: Advancements in Port Management
Both ports are committed to embracing digitalization to optimize passenger and cargo management. Initiatives like the e-Puerto Bilbao digital platform and Portsmouth’s electronic terminal development signify a shift towards automated infrastructures and smart port technologies.
