IUU fishing
Up to 26 million tonnes of fish are caught each year through illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, according to the FAO. A tool for the insurance sector has been developed by the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) in collaboration with partners TM Tracking and Global Fishing Watch to analyse the risks that insured fishing vessels and potential customers are breaking the law. One of the insurance companies using the technology in the trial phase is Gard. Kim Jefferies of Gard and Lindsay Getschel of ORRAA discussed the Vessel Viewer technology and how it can improve openness around fishing vessel operations.
