According to Container News, the Port of New York and New Jersey achieved its second-highest container throughput on record in September 2024, handling 779,388 TEUs—surpassed only by the pandemic-driven surge in 2022. With a cumulative 4,388,397 loaded TEUs processed over the first nine months, the port has maintained its position as the United States’ second-busiest container gateway.
Growth in Container Volume for September
In September, container activity at the Port of New York and New Jersey saw an 18% increase over the same month last year and a 25% rise compared to pre-pandemic September 2019 levels, reflecting sustained demand and operational efficiency.
Year-to-Date Performance and National Ranking
The port announced that it processed over 4.3 million loaded TEUs in the first three quarters of 2024, maintaining its position as the second-busiest U.S. gateway for loaded container cargo, reinforcing its crucial role in supply chain logistics.
Resilience and Adaptation Post-Pandemic
Despite the significant challenges brought by the pandemic, the port’s continued growth highlights its resilience and capacity for handling increased cargo demand, building on the high traffic levels seen during the pandemic’s peak.
