The 45,705 dwt product tanker docked at Naval Shipyard in Veracruz, Mexico caught fire on 20th february. The fire may have caused by an engine room spark which might have inflamed the oily waste. The fire slowly extended to the whole compartment. The shipyard firefighters immediately arrived at the scene of the accident and contained the fire. As it was dangerous to fight fire in the compartment, they decided to wait until the fuel waste burn out completely and the fire to stop by itself.
Reports say that the vessel has been recently sold to a private person and was docked for dismantling when the incident occurred. No injuries to people or other vessels were reported. There was no damage reported to the environ by way of oil leak or other pollutants.
The investigation on the cause of the fire is underway.
