Restroom Urgency Led To Grounding Of Ship

Because the captain had an “urgent need to use the restroom,” a cargo ship ran aground off the northern coast of the Isle of Man as reported by ITV.

Urgent leave

On August 26, 2021, the CEG Orbit capsized off the coast of the Isle of Man. It was transporting wheat grain from Liverpool to Belfast.

According to a report on the incident, at around 2 am, the officer in command experienced a sudden, “sharp pain in his intestines.”

“The ship was left unattended while he left the bridge because he “had an urgent need to leave the bridge to use the restroom.”

He could have altered the ship’s path to prevent it from running aground, but he did not.

The bridge must never be left unattended, according to the Master’s standing instructions, and the CEG Orbit had a crew of five.

Should you need to leave the bridge while on watch, you must first have another person take your place.

No injuries

The Chief Officer “failed to execute a direct directive from the Master by not calling him to the bridge to be temporarily relieved from his vital function of safely steering the vessel,” according to the damning report.

Additionally, it implies that the lighthouse at Point of Ayre and the Isle of Man’s shoreline would have been clearly visible.

The report continues, saying that this “simply should not have happened,” and suggests that the business inform their fleet about the occurrence to increase awareness of the problem.

It also requested that Latvian authorities, where the cargo ship’s registration is held, determine whether any more action is required.

The incident did not result in any injuries, damage to the environment, or harm to wildlife.

The cargo ship was successfully refloated on its second attempt the following day with the aid of a Manx tug boat.
