AI Software

British firm Robosys Automation Limited launched an AI software. It can allow bridge watchkeepers to control ships and improve safety, says an article published in Ship Technology.

About AI Software

Voyager 100 is recognized as “junior officer of the watch” by the autonomous control platform provider. It is installed in the bridge and according to the company, is designed to “improve safety, intelligent capability and manpower assistance”.

AI software available in 2 forms

The latest version of the Voyager 100 is available in 2 forms:

  • One is SmartCaptain, it is an advisory system offering a basic decision Aid to achieve safer navigation and collision avoidance while sailing through busy waters.
  • The other one is SmartPilot that is linked to the ship’s autopilot and propulsion system. It can choose to take complete control instantly if required.

Retrofit possible?

Robosys automation said,Voyager 100 can be installed in existing vessels, that makes it more cost-effective and its typical installation takes seven working days.

Robosys automation comments

RA CEO Aditya Nawab

CEO Aditya Nawab said,Voyager 100 does not aim to replace crew but it allows the bridge crew to multitask safely and provide them a steady hand on the helm”.

RA COO Richard Farrington CBE

COO Richard Farrington CBE says that Voyager 100 will identify a potential discrepancy between radar and the AIS feed, flag this up to the onboard crew until conflict is resolved, all this leads to greater elements of safety

What are the benefits?

Robosys automation said,There is a widely recognised shortage of manpower in the marine industry in general and this software will help with the recruitment and retaining of valuable people who will be more likely to stay at sea if some of the stress and pressure is removed.

Other projects of Robosys automation

It is already working in collaboration with MARIN and is one of a consortium of sixteen Dutch and European organizations engaged in the Netherlands Joint Industry Project on Autonomous Shipping.

Another software offered by it is Voyager 300 which facilitates remote piloting and can transform an existing vessel into a fully autonomous vessel.
