Schulte Group Launches Ocean Opt for Comprehensive Emissions Management

27

Germany’s Schulte Group has launched Ocean Opt, a new company designed to provide comprehensive emissions management solutions for ship managers, owners, and charterers. This initiative emphasizes the Schulte Group’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, addressing the increasing pressure on the maritime industry to achieve climate neutrality.

Regulatory Landscape

The establishment of Ocean Opt comes in response to recent regulatory changes, including the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating scheme and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) introduced in 2023. Furthermore, the shipping industry will be impacted by its inclusion in the European Union’s emissions trading system (EU ETS) from 2025, which poses significant financial implications.

Services Offered

Ocean Opt provides a range of services, including independent consultancy, data management, and platform-based solutions tailored for fleet performance optimization, emissions trading systems, and regulatory compliance. This includes preparations for the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation, which requires monitoring plans for ships calling at EU ports to be submitted to authorized verifiers by the end of August.

Industry Adaptation and Company Goals

As the maritime industry adjusts to the EU ETS, the Schulte Group has over 300 vessels under contract for performance optimization and 200 vessels already subscribed to EU ETS ahead of its 2024 implementation. Ocean Opt aims to expand its client base to include ship owners who manage their fleets in-house, addressing the growing demand for emissions management services.

Leadership Insights

Ian Beveridge, CEO of the Schulte Group, highlighted that Ocean Opt was established to meet the increasing market demand for decarbonization services. Anil Jacob, Managing Director of Ocean Opt, emphasized the company’s focus on helping clients navigate the complexities of emissions tracking, reduction, and compliance.

Ocean Opt represents a significant step forward in addressing the maritime industry’s decarbonization challenges, offering a comprehensive suite of services to ensure regulatory compliance and optimal fleet performance.
