GE Power and shipbuilder Fincantieri are to develop an emission control system for cruise vessels to enable compliance with IMO’s 0.5% cap on fuel sulphur, due to enter force in 2020.

Remove particulate emissions:

The Shipboard Pollutant Removal System will tackle SOx and particulate emissions, and will be suitable for installation on other vessel types using heavy fuel oil.

Agreement on developing various specs:

Under the terms of the agreement Fincantieri will define technical requirements, including design constraints and improvements to develop a competitive product. GE Power will define the features necessary for an emission control system to meet the required performance standards.

Cruise ship market to be benefited:

Giuseppe Bono, CEO, Fincantieri, said: “No shipbuilder has before established a partnership to reduce emissions with a system manufacturer that is among the leaders in the field in which it operates. Having cutting-edge research and innovation at the forefront will allow us to further raise the bar of technology to the benefit of the cruise market.”

Combination of expertise and experience:

Sandro De Poli, president and CEO, GE Italy, added: “We are proud to develop such an innovative solution with one of the main shipbuilders in the world. We will combine Fincantieri expertise and GE’s deep domain experience in air quality technologies for the reduction of pollutants.”

The agreement follows a previous memorandum of understanding between the two companies signed last September.
