Mrs Josephine Teo launched the Singapore Maritime Ambassador Programme (SG-MAP) on the 4th of August at the second Singapore Maritime Dialogue. The programme is aimed at inspiring the younger generation to join the maritime sector by showcasing the immense possibilities that this sector offers.
Highlights:
- 30 Maritime Ambassadors have been identified so far
- About 280 students from various junior colleges, polytechnics and ITE College Central participated
- The exhibition this year featured a future-ready component
- Inter-school maritime quizzes were conducted
“Here is a sector that would be here for good. And today, seven per cent of our GDP can be attributed to the maritime sector with about 170,000 people employed in it,” said Mrs Teo. He also added that there are more than 5,000 maritime companies and 130 shipping groups in the sector.
“So you’re not short of choice,” she said. “And that means that for youth and a career development standpoint, the opportunities are there.”
