The SRS, administered by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), marks a significant achievement by surpassing the 100 million gross tonnage (GT) milestone with the registration of AET’s Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), Eagle Veracruz, on 23 January 2024, reports MPA.

Evolution and Oversight Since 1966

Established in 1966, the SRS oversees Singapore-flagged ships, ensuring compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions to enhance safety, efficiency, and environmental protection. Administering over 4,000 vessels with a total gross tonnage exceeding 100 million, the SRS stands as one of the world’s largest and youngest ship registries.

Singapore Flag: A Global Choice for Shipowners

Building a reputation as a quality registry, the SRS has positioned the Singapore flag as a preferred choice for shipowners and operators globally. Integral in enhancing Singapore’s role as an international maritime center, the SRS facilitates collaboration among top shipping groups, representing the needs and interests of the global maritime community.

Eagle Veracruz: Leading in Green Shipping Technology

The Eagle Veracruz, a dual-fuel liquefied natural gas VLCC, boasts advanced energy-efficient design features and technology. Exceeding 330 meters in length with a volume of over 156,000 GT, it incorporates an optimized hull form, enhanced rudder design, and a wake duct to improve fuel efficiency. The modular main engine allows for future retrofit options to run on low- and zero-carbon fuels.

SRS’s Commitment to Green and Digital Shipping

Demonstrating a commitment to maritime digitalization and decarbonization, the SRS awarded 22 Green Ship Certificates in 2023 under the Green Ship Programme. The MPA anticipates a growing trend of greener ships choosing Singapore as their flag of choice. Collaborating with shipping companies, the MPA encourages the adoption of low- and zero-carbon fuels, as well as energy-efficient technology and designs, offering incentives such as reductions in Initial Registration Fees and rebates on Annual Tonnage Tax.
