On November 18, the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand received a distress call from captain of an ‘Ilanga’ vessel and he was swiftly rescued by a cargo vessel.
What happened?
A 67 year old Norwegian yachtsman, contacted the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand after his ‘Ilanga’ was caught in strong winds of 50 knot and very choppy seas, to the east of Norfolk Island. The yachtsman was forced to activate his emergency beacon after his ‘Ilanga’ sustained damages to its sails, rigging, a broken window, and had taken on some water. It also caught a fire in its electrical panel.
Cargo ship diverted for rescue:
The RCCNZ diverted the container ship ‘Southern Lily’ to the yachtsman aid and meet the yacht. The Norwegian man was picked up on good health from the 12-metre yacht about 140 nautical miles northeast of Cape Brett on November 19.
The rescuers battled southerly winds of 25 knots and swells of up to 3.5 meters to reach the damaged yacht. The cargo vessel ‘Southern Lily’ was expected to arrive in Auckland in the afternoon of November 19.
