Steamship Mutual & Vale SA’s Joint Decarbonization Initiative Revealed

297

Vale SA, dedicated to reducing carbon emissions in shipping, collaborates with Steamship Mutual. Their joint initiative includes installing Anemoi Rotor sails on a 400,000DWT Valemax vessel, aiming for decarbonization.

Efficiency – Rotor Sails

Norsepower’s rotor sails, utilized by Vale, reduce main engine power needs through the ‘magnus effect’, aiding decarbonization.

Vale engaged Norsepower for the 325,000 dwt VLOC Sea Zhoushan, estimating an 8% efficiency gain and 3,400 tons/year CO2 reduction on analyzed routes.

Rotor sails can tilt for cargo ops, boosting sustainability efforts.

Air Lubrication System

Vale collaborates with Silverstream Technologies for vessel efficiency improvements using the Air Lubrication System (ALS), aiming for up to 8% fuel reduction and 5,600 tons/year CO2 cut on the 325,000 dwt VLOC Sea Victoria.

Pan Ocean owns both vessels involved in these sustainability projects. The Club joins Vale in risk assessment workshops, ensuring compliance with alternative design regulations like SOLAS II-1 Regulation 55 for innovative installations.

Risk Assessment Collaboration

HAZID and HAZOP studies are crucial for assessing hazards in innovative designs and fuel adoptions like LNG, Methanol, and Ammonia.

Steamship Mutual’s Loss Prevention Department actively contributes expertise in VLOC engineering and operations during HAZID workshops, supporting Vale’s decarbonization efforts.
