Accident | : Vessel Grounding |
Vessel type | : General Cargo Ship |
Location | : Bosphorus Strait |
Casualties/Pollution | : Nil |
A Turkish general cargo ship ran aground in Bosphorus Strait. The rudder failure in the cargo ship blocked the steering gear which threatened the vessel to hit the shores. But the vessel’s crew succeeded in dropping the emergency anchor which prevented the vessel from harder grounding and damages.
Though the vessel anchored just a few meters from the shore, the bow started hitting the bottom. The local authorities refloated the vessel to safe depth. The vessel is now anchored off Buyukdere, where the vessel will be repaired, inspected and surveyed.
An investigation for the cause of the incident is underway. There were no reports of casualties nor pollution.
