Svitzer Orders New Battery-Powered Tug For Øresund Strait

Svitzer has announced the addition of a new battery-powered tug to its fleet, designed to deliver near-zero emissions towage services in the Øresund Strait, which connects Denmark and Sweden. The tug, built by Sanmar Shipyard, is set for delivery in the second half of 2025.

This marks another step in Svitzer’s journey toward decarbonizing operations, aligning with its target to significantly reduce CO2 emissions across its global fleet by 2030.

Key Features of the Battery Tug

  • Design: Based on the ElectRA 2500-SX by naval architect Robert Allan Ltd.
  • Dimensions: 25.4 meters long with a 5.6-meter draft.
  • Bollard Pull: 70 tons.
  • Battery Capacity: 1,818 kWh, providing safe and efficient operation on electrical power alone.
  • Backup Systems: Equipped with two generators for extended endurance and firefighting operations.
  • Gross Tonnage: 356 GT.
