Tanker Grounded on the Rhine

On August 13, 2017, the tanker “Ventrans II”, enroute from Mannheim to Rotterdam, was disabled and ran aground on the Rhine near Neuwied.

A technical malfunction reported to have caused a blackout on board the vessel leading to rudder failure.

The vessel alerted the emergency systems at Weißenthurm and Neuwied. The captain later was able to carry out an emergency anchoring maneuver, and the crew started attempts to get the engine running again.

Later on the day the systems reportedly started working again and the water police escorted the tanker to a berth for repairs. The ship reportedly was berthed in Rotterdam on August 17.
