The Cosco Shipping Virgo’s Remarkable Journey

In late September, the Cosco Shipping Virgo, a massive 20,000-TEU container ship, arrived at the Port of Hamburg, highlighting the growing maritime connectivity between China and Europe. This impressive vessel, commanded by Captain Mo Weidong, made its journey from China’s Tianjin Port, stopping at various ports along the way, and is a testament to the transformative effects of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Captain Mo, with over three decades of shipping experience, spoke of the flourishing trade and economic exchanges between the two regions.

Port of Hamburg’s Vital Role

Approximately one-third of the containers processed at the Port of Hamburg either originate from China or are bound for China. Jens Meier, CEO of Hamburg Port Authority, emphasized the significance of cooperation between the Port of Hamburg and Chinese ports, sharing knowledge and strengthening both maritime and land-based corridors. This strong partnership supports the seamless flow of goods and promotes trade resilience.

Overcoming Challenges During the Pandemic

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the flow of trade between China and Europe has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Trade volumes have increased, and efficiency in ports like Piraeus Port in Greece has improved. This underscores the robust nature of the China-EU trade relationship and its capacity to adapt and thrive in uncertain times.

Strengthening China-EU Trade and Economic Partnership

In 2022, China and the EU achieved record bilateral trade flows, totaling 847.3 billion U.S. dollars. This not only reflects their strong economic ties but also showcases the enduring growth of their partnership. BRI cooperation has played a pivotal role in enhancing maritime connectivity, with COSCO Shipping leading the way by operating numerous container liner routes and investing in ports within partner countries. These developments have resulted in significant benefits for the people and economies involved.
