One maritime security company reported that it was hit by gunfire around a ship about 100 nautical miles off Yemen’s Aden. This is the first such incident in some months in the region, reports Reuters.

Ship Tailed, Shots Fired

The agency said the ship was pursued for approximately two hours by several small boats, during which time shots were fired. The crew was safe, and the ship sailed on its intended course. An investigation is ongoing, but no information has been released about the ship or the people involved in the pursuit.

Background of Regional Maritime Activity

Since late 2023, armed factions within the region have conducted a string of maritime operations, in the name of political solidarity with events in Gaza. The activities have caused disruptions to international shipping lanes, with some events resulting in ships being damaged and people killed.

Pause and Resumption of Hostilities

Violence temporarily ceased after an early 2024 ceasefire but resumed in March as tensions and unmet terms regarding humanitarian access to aid continued. The responsible group has publicly vowed to continue operations within regional waters.

Monitoring Continues

Although no responsibility has yet been claimed for the latest incident, maritime authorities have kept the area on high alert. The situation is fluid with international concern to secure the safety of commercial lanes through regional waters.
