[Watch] Video Captures Container Ship Crash into US Tanker

111

Newly released video footage has shed light on the recent collision between a container ship and a U.S.-flagged tanker off the coast of Grimsby, reports Marine Link.

Captured by Orca AI’s SeaPod lookout system aboard the anchored tanker Ionic Aspis, the footage reveals the moment of impact, highlighting the dense fog that likely impaired the crew’s visibility. Thermal imaging further details the approach of the container ship and the subsequent explosion upon collision.

Underscoring the vulnerabilities of maritime navigation

Yarden Gross, CEO and Co-founder of Orca AI, emphasized that the incident underscores the vulnerabilities of maritime navigation, particularly in poor visibility conditions. He noted that despite technological advancements, crews often rely on traditional navigation tools that may struggle with target detection in low visibility, rough weather, and dense fog. Additionally, factors like crew fatigue can slow reaction times, increasing the risk of human error.

The collision, which occurred on March 10, 2025, resulted in significant fires and explosions on both vessels. The tanker, anchored at the time and carrying jet fuel for the U.S. military, sustained damage leading to fuel leakage. However, the tanker’s owner, reported that the majority of the jet fuel cargo remains secure, with only two of the vessel’s 18 fuel tanks leaking, accounting for about 10% of its cargo.

All 23 American crew members of the tanker were safely evacuated. The captain of the container ship, identified as a 59-year-old Russian national, has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. The incident has prompted investigations by the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch, with assistance from U.S. and Portuguese authorities.

This event has sparked renewed discussions on navigation safety, the integration of advanced technologies, and the potential of AI-assisted decision-making to enhance situational awareness and reduce risks in maritime operations.
