Hapag-Lloyd has initiated a program to ‘jumbo-ise’ its Copiapo-class vessels at China’s Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard, increasing their capacity from 9,324 TEU to approximately 10,200 TEU. This upgrade involves raising the height of lashing bridges to accommodate two additional containers per stack, along with corresponding adjustments to funnels and deckhouses to maintain crew visibility and proper exhaust ventilation, reports the Loadstar.
However, these modifications have raised concerns regarding compliance with U.S. regulations. The Trump administration’s policies impose restrictions on certain Chinese shipyards, potentially affecting vessels serviced at these facilities. As a result, Hapag-Lloyd’s decision to utilize Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard for these upgrades may subject the company to increased scrutiny and regulatory challenges when operating within U.S. waters.
The situation underscores the complexities global shipping companies face in navigating international regulations while striving to enhance operational efficiency.
